It's actually a 'south' magnetic pole that exists a few thousand miles from the north geographic pole. But the 'poles' of a magnet were named 'north' and 'south' because of teh way they aligned themselves with the Earths magnetic field.

The compass needle will always be along the North South direction.

The one which points always the North direction is called North Pole of the magnet and the other one which points always the North direction is called South Pole of the magnet.

If you place another compass needle along the North south direction and also in line with the first compass, the south pole of the second magnet will be nearer to the north pole of the first magnet and the north pole of the second magnet will be away.

If you consider earth as a huge magnet, North Pole of our compass needle points the north direction in other words the South Pole of the huge magnet.

The confusion is due to the nomenclature of the words we are using.

Both the earth’s pole and the earth’s magnetic pole are called poles.

We must remember that the earth’s North Pole is very near to (almost the same as) the Earth’s magnet’s South Pole.

earth's northern magnetic pole is alway's changing, alway's somewhere in the Canada North island's, (archipelago) alway's related to it's anode (positve pulse) and it's diode response. (neutron recessive response) Each degree of the 360 degree's, on earth point's to the magnetic north pole, and if you don't know your degree, you would have to backtrack to the last know position and then look at the variation,(flow around obstacle's) and then compute your actual position. ( if you are in central usa the chance's of your being due south are closer than elswhere.
