They have a pc and a broadband connection. If I take my laptop there to use, the internet, do I need to take my modem or can the cord plug directly into the phone socket at their house? Very confused!

If they have an active internet connection then you
should be able to just plugin and go from there.

If they are using a router (this means they are connected
to a network) then you can hook your CAT-5 cable into
their router and use their internet. If you're having problems
connecting then make sure that the router's firewall is
either disabled or your MAC address is allowed by the
router and your port is open.

You can not use your broadband at someone else's home. If you took your modem there, it would not work because 1) they are not paying to have a broadband signal coming into their home and 2) the modem is only configured to work on your phone line.

However if the have their own broadband modem, you can unhook their computer and hook up your laptop instead.

You can always use a land line to connect to a dial up isp. However, if you want to use there broadband, you'll need to hook up to their router, either through an ethernet cord or a wireless connection.

Depends.

If you don't use the same ISP, you may have to use their modem and install that.

If they have a router you can go wireless or plug in with a standard cat5e ethernet cable.

Make sure your laptop is broadband accessible. And it will be ok.
