I was sitting out on the balcony just now with my dog looking at hot air balloons go by when I noticed a crawling feeling on me. I look down and there are tiny black specks crawling on my feet and legs. They don't fly or jump. My apartment building was just built last year and my particular one faces a small wooded area. I don't know if either of these have anything to do with them, but my balcony is wood and I have a bird feeder up so there's a little bit of bird poop on my balcony, too. Oh yeah, and there's a bird nest up in the top corner, but it's really high up (10') compared to where the bugs are.

Probably mites. Spray the balcony area with just plain alcohol. Anywhere that you seen them. This should get rid of them for a month or so. You will eventually have to keep doing this every so often.

Put out a piece of white paper and let some of the critters crawl onto it. Wipe your finger across them -- if they leave red streaks they're spider mites. Harmless to humans. Nasty to plants.
Mix ordinary dish soap and water in an atomizer and spray all around your balcony.

I hope they're not ticks!

Depending on where you live, they could be lots of things. Put a few in a plastic baggie and ask a local High School Biology teacher. Or ask at a Nursery.

Are they round and "slick" looking? Like little beetles?

If so, they are most likley dermestid, or carpet beetles. The ones she has are also black.

My girlfriend also lives near a wooded area and and these little guys are everywhere.
