How's it going? I attended culinary scool at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. There are many options that you could pursue including: certification, associate's, bachelors, and masters degrees. If you are REALLY serious about this...I recomend working in a kitchen for a while and make sure that this type of work is really for you! You usually start washing dishes, or doing some sort of prep work then move up to what is known as a "LINE COOK". It is where food is cooked when orders come in. This line of work is a lot of fun, but it also has it's downside...You can kiss all evenings and weekends goodbye(This is where all the money is, so it means you'll work these hours)!!! The hours are long... I work 60-70 hours per week, and even more during the holiday season! I don't want to scare you away, I just want to be honest with you. Getting back to your origional qustion... There are 2 schools that are arguably the best in the nation. One is Johnson & Wales, the other is the CIA (Culinary Institute of America). Both offer associates, bachelors, and masters degrees. There are also tons of programs that are available through tech schools and things of that nature. I recomend touring as many schools as you can before deciding on one. That way you get a better feel for what the school can offer YOU! Also, check out the book "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain, it gives you a fairly accurate portrayal of what working in kitchens is really like. Good Luck!

Never. It is rare for chefs to do college work related to their cooking - it is on the job after basic trade school training. Some colleges, especially junior colleges, are now offering restaurant training which includes management of the facility but whether these prepare chef's in the usual sense depends greatly on the program.

Many 2 year community colleges have programs for culinary arts. (Like Erie Community College in Williamsville, NY) There are also four year schools, like Mercyhurst in Erie, PA, that offer classes. Although it's a four year school, you are able to obtain an associate's degree in culinary arts in 2 years. If you want to become a professional chef, there are Culinary Arts Institutes, like the one in NYC, where you can go. Some of these programs are longer (a few years) and want you to get hands-on experience through internships and jobs. If you need information, try searching "Culinary arts" on collegeboard.com
