Definitely scan your computer for spyware. This may be the main culprit that is preventing your computer from shutting down. However, I would also check the amount of programs and processes running in the background you can do this by altering your MSconfiguration. Here is how.

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",
click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

Hope this helps!

On RUN type MSCOFIG, go to "start up", and unchek one application at a time. The instant you find your PC shuts off faster, thats the application you should uncheck permanently, and if you dont need it, REMOVE IT.

Also remove junk files in your PC. In RUN type *temp, click ok, you will find junk files, get rid of it, by selecting all, and deleting it, you can do the same with typing COOKIES, and do the same. This is not a miracle cure, half hour shut down is stange, but try the above. Hope it helps

One of the previous answers are good, but it is msconfig. The computer is still in a program. Sometimes, it might be a bug. So do an anti-spy sweep and virus scan before you turn off your computer again. So do the scans first, then do the msconfig second. Most likely, this will solve your problem. Don't forget to do your disk defragmenter. Good Luck!

Even our Exchange server with 70 users doesnt take that long to shutdown :)

Most likely caused by a program refused to die, or corrupted/damaged hardware drivers.
