Have a friend who reformatted the hard drive now it has a partition on it which is stopping things from downloading ,does anyone know how to fix this problem please,thanks.

Use a utility such as Partition Magic. There are many available as Shareware & freeware. Try major geeks.com. or similar download sites.

You can accomplish it by Windows XP's "Disk Management". You can delete or resize a partition from there.
