Saturated means there are only single bonds between carbons. All the carbons are sp3 hybridized. Unsaturated means one or more double or triple bonds. The carbons in a double bond are sp2 hybridized and they are sp hybridized in a triple bond.

Alkanes are saturated, alkenes and alkynes are unsaturated.

Saturated hydrocarbons obey the formula CnH2n+2. So the number of H atoms in a formula subtracted from the saturated hydrocarbon (of the same no of carbon atoms) divided by 2 gives a clue to structure. A C2H5 can't exist. Degree of saturation 0.5 B C4H10. Degree of saturation 0. This is a saturated alkane - propane. C C3H12 Most H atoms can have is 8. Does not exist D C2H2 Degree of saturation is 2. Can be two double bonds (not possible here - only 2 C atoms) or one triple bond. This is an unsaturated hydrocarbon - acetylene. E CH2 Does not exist. This group is known as methylene eg C2H2Cl2 is methylene chloride or dichloromethane.

Saturated means no multiple bonds, so that the molecule is "saturated" with hydrogen. Unsaturated molecules have at least one double or triple bond or a ring.

It refers to alkanes and alkenes.
Alkanes have 4 hydrogen surrounding it singly bonded.Whereas Alkanes have 3 hydrogen surrounding it due to the presence of a double bond.Alkanes are said to be staurated because it already has four hydrogens attached/surrounding it .However alkenes are unstaurated due to the double bond as a result the bond can be broken and new atoms(i think is the correct word) can be added unto it.
This is a very important in determining alkanes and alkenes in test with the use of bromine or potassium magnate .
Alkene because it is unsaturated turns Potassium manganate from purple to colourless where as in the alkane the colour remains the same because it is saturated.
