That tank is a bit small for a red devil. I wouldn't really recommend a big fish for a small tank at all, so you might want to rethink you fish choices. That tank would be ok for some fish around the size of firemouth cichlids, but that's about as large as you should go really. I think that would be a great tank for a few apistogrammas.. They are nice colorful dwarf south american cichlids that would be very at home in a tank that size and would probably breed in that tank with no problems at all.

If you are going for a Cichlid it's best to keep with Cichlids. Though do some research because some are more aggressive than others. African Cichilds are some of the most colorul fresh water fish so you will have a fairlly large assortment to choose from. I would locate a fish store that specializes in Cichlids and be sure to ask questions. Maybe even buy a book. Cichilds will get very BIG, because your fish tank is on the small side I would suggest starting out with just a few fish maybe 2-3. Once you get the hang of it upgrade to a bigger tank with a better filtration system. Enjoy!

Based on the messurements you gave you have a 25gl long tank

24x12x20/231= 24.9gls

As a red devil gets to at least 10inches you should yield at minimum 2gallons per inch for this fish and (and that's with a ton of water changes) so there is no way you will be able to house more than one red devil in this tank when they are full grown you might be able to handel a few babies but either you will have to then find new homes for them as they grow or your going to have to get a much bigger tank...

If you really like the idea of cichilds try some kribs they only get up to about 4 inches so you could have a few of them.

The tank is too small for them. Plus you will need to get a filtration system and heater for any type of cichlid. You will be better of with the African Cichlids. But still I wouldn't. What's wrong the a Male Betta's?

You would need a bigger tank for chilids, I'd say 30gallon or bigger! A fish like chilids will not grow to their full size in the tank you got and they will not be happy! Some gourmies get large and are nice to keep, but need room to grow also! The tank you have would be a great community tank for fish like guppies, mollies, barbs, any fish that does not get bigger than 3 inches!

That size tank is too small for a Red Devil.
