or something like that....are they really watching or is it just to scare shoplifters?

They are really watching. I used to work in a department store similar to Macy's and their security (they call it loss prevention) was crazy! Loss prevention people at department stores live to catch theives! Don't shoplift. It's not worth it. They can't catch everybody, but they will catch most.

Yes, they may be really watching you. They may not always be there if they are short staffed and taking a break but usually they will have some one watching. Shoplifting is a serious crime that causes the prices of merchandise to rise for all of us.

They are not watching you try on and take off your clothes. That just means that only female associates are allowed in the female dressing rooms and same with males. That would be illegal for them to be actually watching you undress.
