I live on the third floor of an apartment building with no basement or crawl space. Recently there have been a few tornadoes and deaths caused by them. Where's the best place to go in my situation? (I also have a 6 month old to consider)

One thing i just want to say. Just remember that the odds that your building will be destoryed by a tornado are extremely low. It is good to know what to do during a warning but i wouldn't let it keep you up at night.

Get to a lower level and in the halls between the doors if that is how your apartment building is set up. Or ask a neighbor if you can come into their apartment that is on the ground floor. If you have no warnings you should try to get into your tub and pull something over you. First and foremost, get on the ground level.

Here is a website on tornado safety:

Tornado Direction

Generally, tornados move from the southwest to northeast.

Seeking Shelter

Avoid:

Glass: Usually breaks and becomes dangerous flying missiles during a tornado. Especially avoid shelter near glass on the south and west walls.
Long Open Rooms: Dining halls, etc.
Southwest Wall: North walls are safest, followed by east walls.
Look for:
Lowest Floor
Interior Spaces: Washrooms, closets or hallways NOT facing south or west.
Concrete, Steel, or Wood Structures: However, AVOID mobile homes, cars, etc.
Hallways Facing North and East
Protected Inner Core of a Large Building: Preferably lower floor.
Cars and Mobile Homes Provide POOR Shelter

Best Position
Inside – Curl up, with arms protecting your head.
Outside – Lie flat in a ditch with your arms protecting your head, or seek shelter in a culvert.

- Center hallway of a first floor apartment.

Driving a Car
Take a road that is a right angle to the tornado’s path.
Park under a bridge.
Leave the car and lie flat in a ditch, protecting their head.

well if you have nowhere else to go. if you are in the senter of the building then you are in the safest part of the apartment building. also keep windows open to avoid implosion because of the air pressure. and stay in the center of your place away from windows preferible in the bathtub especially if there are no windows. under pleanty of blankets and pillows. that is if you cannot make it to ground floor center apartment. God forbid it should happen and you are outside got to the nearest overpass and under it hide in the far corner in the center under the road the concrete would protect you.

Get to know the people around there area of your apartments, if they're good people they'll share a basement or crawl space with you!

Go to the closest area in the center of the apartment building and be sure to sit down and cover your head. Do NOT go near any windows.

Go to the center of the building and lay down in a crouch position, with the little one below you. Be sure there isn't any windows in the hall.

Find a sturdy place in your apartment. The best place is in a bathtub or closet. Either are good because they give your protection from flying debris

Go to the center of the building ... which might not be the center of your apt. If you can't ... go to the bathroom and get in the tub...assuming it is poreclin. it will protect you.
