I believe the very beginning speck of the hippie era started when the Beatles came to America. Not that they specifically did anything but this is when hair fashion and clothing fashion started the change.

I would say the total era from beginning to end , 1963-64 to 1972. The fashions were the first clue. Pointy toed snap tongued black shoes, got a slighty higher top and were called Beatle Boots. Hair got long and straight and was parted down the middle, much as the Beatles were.

Era pretty much ended when Vietnam ended and the draft stopped in 1972 and Nixon left office. Wasn't long after that we slid into the Disco era and leisure suits, open front shirts and gold chains.

( I will never wear bell-bottoms or leisure suits ever again)

If you look at it from a pop culture perspective, the Altamont Speedway concert in 1969 is accepted. You probably remember reading something about the Hells Angels, the Rolling Stones, and lots of blood.

The political perspective would focus more on the start of the end of the Vietnam Conflict in 1972 (point at which the opinion of the 'counter culture' was accepted in the mainstream).

If you go to Manitou Springs, Colorado you'll see the hippy era didn't end.
