There is not necessarily a sure fire way of knowing unless you ask him. I've guessed incorrectly so many times now that I'm gun shy. You wouldn't believe how many Butch Gay men are out there! I'm only sure if a guys Gay when I visit a gay bar/club.....usually.

Often you don't. Most ideas about gender are culturally fabricated, although there is a "gay subculture". The point is that your sexual orientation doesn't make you "act" a certain way, but if you consider it a part of your identity, it may influence how you present yourself or how others perceive you.
