Mothers day has passed and my moms birthday is coming up so we decided to get her one big gift. We have never had a pet before so my brother suggested a dog. We live in a small apartment, there are no kids, we would walk it whenever necessary, would like minimal shedding and pet dander, grooming isn't a big deal so long it can be done at home, it must be small, doesn't bark a lot or very loudly, and is friendly. Would a papillon fit these conditions? If not, what other breeds do you recommend?

My moms has always wanted a pet but has just never been able to get one so I'm not worried if she'll like it as she has a lot of downtime in the afternoons.

Papillions can be yappy, but well socialized, spayed/neutered early, walked daily, it sounds like it would be a good fit for your situation! Always make sure with your apartment manager/landlord first - that is one of the main reasons dogs are turned in to shelters! Also, unless you are over 18 (of legal age to be considered a pet owner), I would definitely ask first! Not everyone wants to be suprised with a puppy, so be willing to care for it 100% if your mother is not down with it!

YES! Well, of coarse I'm going to say yes because I am the BIGGEST Papillon enthusiast....

Papillons are good for apartments given their size, but they bark ALOT and very loudly and at anything [literally]. This can be a problem. They can be a one person dog, which has it's perks but more flaws. Many of the ones I come across want ALL of the attention, and will be very unhappy with out it.

They do not need as much grooming as expected, but you should brush a papillon thoroughly at LEAST once a week. If you do not, you can find matted fur in unlikely places (under the armpits, within the ear fringes)

A papillon would LOVE daily walks, but will not complain if they don't get them. Still, you should walk any dog every day, no matter the breed.

They are pretty adaptable dog, and the eighth smartest breed according to the AKC. Mine have been easy to train and according to a friend “house-train themselves”. This is an exaggeration, but they will learn it quick.

If you can stand a lot of barking, go ahead and get one! But like I said- they bark, and bark, and bark.

I have a papillon and she does not bark excessively but maybe that's because I've taught her how to bark and how to hush. Grooming can be tricky because they have very long pretty hair but they don't shed as bad as most dogs. Their hair is easy enough to brush if you teach them how to be groomed and if you keep up with it. Apartments are fine but they are active dogs (they usually excel in agility competitions) so they need to have lots of walks and exercise. Papillons are also super smart dogs so they'll behave better and be happier with an owner who will teach them things. Be sure to get a lot of toys and treats to keep the dog busy. I highly recommend a papillon. Good luck!

Don't susrprise anyone with a pet, hon. Nasty.

And mixed breed dogs are healthier and smarter than purebreds. So, consult your mom about a pet before you up and get her one. It may end up in the pound with a needle.

Be aware that if you buy a puppy, the personalitry is never known, and no breed is all the things you want. If you adopt an adult dog, all the people who have taken care of that dog know lots about it. See Saturday at Petco or your Humane assoc. but first, check with your mom.....

I wound up with a Chinese Crested and I would really recommend these dogs. They don't shed, usually don't do a lot of barking, are very loving and adoring to its owners and can be bald or have hair that grows like a humans. Mine was 17 years old last month when I finally had to have him put to sleep - worst thing I ever had to do, but best for him. They are great!

Any small breed would be good but the key is in the training.
As far as barking a Basenji has a difeeent vocal chord and can not bark

aww, mommy;s boy!! am sure she will appreciate it. i think a pap is an ok idea? where did it come from anyway?

if u want a breed that is small, barks less, minimum grooming, likes family life and walks and doesnt shed a lot

maltese ( for cuddly furry balls)
toy poodle ( if u prefer curly fur )
italian greyhounds ( beautiful, homely and smooth coat)

good luck
