There is always a dilemma , to switch the engine of or keep it runnig for a couple of minutes, How mutch more does it realy takes to start up the engiene than standing still ? percentage ofcorse, I know that it is difernt from engiene to engine. thanks

modern cars with fuel injection use less fuel to start the engine than older cars with carburetors, so this is less of an issue these days. if your car is fuel injected, i'd go ahead and shut it off if you are going to stop somewhere for more than a minute or so.

if you are talking about the same elapsed time, it requires more fuel to start the car than to idle. if your talking about waiting at the drive through bank it requires more fuel to idle. newer cars are not as bad in either situation but the older your car is the worse it will be in both situations.

An engine can not use fuel if it's off.

it will use more gas to start it back up again so it will not hurt it so leave it running for a few minutes
