me again, windows xp downstairs windows vista up have everything connected per instructions and on the vista computer it says there is a network cable unplugged? I have DSL connection and can't figure out why i can't get internet upstairs. ALSO when i downloaded all the software for the Netgear i did it on the vista computer. I am thinking I may should have downloaded something on this computer. Instructions vague and can't understand tech support people. It seems to me that i should have to download software on this xp computer since the router is connected to it. and the software for the wireless adapter software on the vista comp. I AM SO CONFUSED!!

You do not need to do a think to your XP computer. The router is a stand alone device and only requires a computer connected to it via ethernet for the inital setup.
It sounds like your vista computer that you are trying to install the wireless adapter on is not seeing the wireless adapter. The cable unplugged message you are getting is refering to the ethernet port on the back of the computer.
What it sounds like is really happening is that you dont have Vista Drivers for your wireless adapter. You cant load the XP drivers in vista, it just wont work. Goto the manufacturers web site of the wirelress adapter and find out if they have vista drivers for your adapter yet.....

OK if the Vista computer is connecting wirelessly or is supposed to be connecting wirelessly then you have no network cable so of course it should be unplugged.
To connect wirelessly you have to configure your machine to match the settings of the local Netgear router. There should not be any need for additional software.
If you are upstairs and the router is downstairs.. take the comupter downstairs to get this setup. The reason being is you may just be too far away to get a good wireless connection. To eliminate that possiblity get near the router when trying to get setup. Once you are near the router your computer will probably "see" the wireless signal and with Vista, it should tell you it "sees" one avialble (if this is a laptop be sure the wireless card is truned on.. many have a switch to disable it when not in use).
If you still DONT see a wireless connection check the network connections in the control panel and be sure you see a wireless adapter listed.

The network cable is unplugged is coming from your ethernet card. (wired network card.) Odds are, you have not installed the drivers (software) for your wireless card on vista. If the XP computer is connected to the router via wire, then you probably already have the drivers installed (XP recognizes most ethernet cards by default, as they are pretty generic.) I can't tell if you are having trouble with the XP machine or not. Make sure you have installed the software for all network cards (wired or wireless) you are planning to use.
(Note: as to avoid confusion, the network "card" on the vista machine may not be an add in card. Most mainboards have integrated LAN chips on them nowadays.)

when setting up the router you are not installing anything on the pc you are only connecting to the router, it does not matter which pc you used, dont worry about the network cable thing that is normal, has the pc you are wanting to be wireless got a wireless card installed or a wireless adapter fitted, you will need one of these to get a wireless signal, contact me if you need more help

make sure that there was no power or internet connection on any device before you hooked up your network. Disconnect everything, turn off the internet connection to the modem, replug, turn on the internet connection, then turn on your devices. everyting should be fine then
