Sorry, but my understanding of it as a Christian is that masturbation is a sin. Like most sins, it starts in the mind and goes on from there.
But, you know, it's also sin to lie, be unkind, slander people, gossip, have lust, cause lust, overeat, overdrink, anything that pollutes your body, etc. all the things that we all do.
Just because something is a sin doesn't mean that people don't "do it all the time."
The point of sin awareness is to build our relationship with God, to truly understand how far we are from God's perfection and ideals, and to continue in prayer for all of our daily and hourly needs.
Do I always do this? Of course not. Do I masturbate? I do. Do I feel guilty about it at the time? No, because I am human. Do I pray about it? Of course.

And there is plenty in the Bible that tells us masturbation is wrong, not the least of which is if you are single, can preoccupy you in solitude, and keep you from living in this real world with real people, and in marriage can take away from your sexual relationship with your spouse;

If you study the Bible, this will become clear to you. I have found it futile to post scripture on this site because I don't think than non-believers are interested, and believers can look it up themselves.

I really appreciate your Q& A, Colie but have to disagree with your premise and most of the answerers so far.
(And yes, I am prepared for all the THUMBS!)

I think we all should meet, discuss this and then break up into, um, "discussion" groups. We gotta get a hand on this situation.

PS> I know my toes curl sometimes right at the climactic time!

Playing with yourself should not be a sin unless it gets out of hand (no pun intended....well, sort of). I mean, no public craziness or job loss.

Joke answer: It's only a sin if you cheat.

The Bible says it is better to put a man's seed in the belly of a whore than on the ground. Also, our sexual organs are for love and thus, the procreation of the species, not as a portable amusement park. I doubt that our mouths and butts were made for sex either. Mankind is twisted due to an opposing "force" and people feed into the lie.
