Insecurity. It is a very fragile age.
I think people don't know anything about anything until they are in their 30s. The teen age years are the worst. I think the 20s are when people get to know themselves and the 30s is when we finally are secure and developed and may actually start knowing something about life. I speak from experience, but of course, there are exceptions to everything. Some adults are always immature and some kids are very bright.

i think you might find that no matter how old people get, they still tend to make fun of people. i graduated high school in '95 and typically hang out with people my own age or older and find that we ALL still make fun of things and people. i think its kind of in our nature as humans to laugh at things that are out of the ordinary or unusual or just plain different than ourselves. but, i must say, that i am mostly known for making fun of myself and of my husband. we are good sports and are able to laugh at ourselves and eachother without feeling bad about it.
i don't think it's right to make fun of things like physical disabilities, or things that are blatantly not controllable. however, i don't see too much harm in getting a giggle out of making a little private joke about the guy at the gym playing air guitar listening to his i-pod while looking in the mirror at himself or wispering with a friend about the cashier at the supermarket that had a big booger hanging out of her nose. hehehehe.

I think it's the age. Most teens are arrogant. Some don't have re-enforced morals or values.
Some think they are "cool" or "gangstas". It is just merely a phase of arrogance some people go through.

It is high school, that is what kids do. Kids can be cruel, sometimes on purpose, sometimes without giving it much thought.
They don't realize, mostly, that they aren't all that different.

Because it scares them to believe that they are just like everyone else. They like to think they're special.
