wait do you mean x^2+4x-12??? if that is what you meant then this is how you do it:

first set your equation up

you know that x*x=x^2

so you set it up like this
(x )(x )

now since the last number is a negative, we know that a positive times a negative is a negative. +*- = -

so the next step is to do that

(x- )(x+ )

next you find factors of 12. They are 4*3 and 6*2. Now you look for factors which you add to get 4 and you know one is a negative and one has to be a positive. So you kno 6-2=4, which is your middle term 4! so now you have to put those in.

(x+6)(x-2) which is your answer :)

12 breaks into 6 and 2
4 and 3
12 and 1

looks like 6 and 2 would subtract to equal 4

(x+6)(x-2)

x²+4-12 = x²-8. that you can't really factor.

unless you meant
x²+4x-12, that would factor to (x+6)(x-2)
