Dunno, dunno, and dunno! Sadly, we're gonna have to wait for the next season (or longer, perhaps) to get answers! Honest to pete, I'm gonna watch it again tonight, to see if I can get any new details the second time around.
Personally, I think an even better question is how is Jack's dad alive in the future, if Jack already saw his dead body in the casket in Australia?
Someone earlier suggested that perhaps all of those "forward flashes" were actually just Jack day-dreaming about what would happen if Ben was really right.
I was thinking that it might be Juliette's funeral...Otherwise, wouldn't Kate have gone to Sun's or Sawyer's? They're friends (or more), after all.
BTW...why didn't Charlie just swim out of the broken porthole?

It was indeed somewhat confusing.
- I really don't know what caused Jack to hit rock-bottom.
- I don't recall.
- I think that he managed to come to terms with things, but that doesn't mean the issues are forever resolved. Once he hit rock bottom (however that may have happened), it makes a lot of sense that those issues would once again rise to the surface.
- I suspect that Kate and Sawyer are together, and that something terrible happened between Sawyer and Jack such that Sawyer would be furious if he knew Jack was spending time with Kate.
- Given that nobody showed up, definitely not Sun. Everybody likes Sun. I don't think it's Sawyer. I actually think it was probably Locke, unless something next season brings him back into line with everybody else. Jack and Locke have always had a difficult relationship, and it makes perfect sense to me that Jack would show up at his funeral, but not think of him as a friend.
It left me wondering too. I'm afraid I don't think it was a very good season finale. It does, however, give the impression that they have plans for the next season -- filling in the gaps between the present day and the future shown in the season finale. That seems like a good thing, since it's been unclear whether the writers really had a clue what direction they were going in or were just randomly making stuff up week to week.

My thoughts:
I think kate was with either A. Sawyer or B. Part of the Darma group that doesnt want her talking to Jack.
I think Jack left behind some of the people on the island and thats why he is at rock bottom, thats why he wants to go back.
His father was not in the casket, I assume he is dead, but you never know, Jack was really out of it because of the drugs and booze.
I think Jack and Kate are at odds because of Jacks downward spiral, also maybe Kate reached an agreement to get a pardon for her crime in exchange for not bringing up the island publically? The Hanso foundation is deep and powerfull.
I think it was Ben's funeral, no one likes him so no one showed up, also Jack was probably sad because he is the only one who knows where the island is.
I have been thinking about the finale alot lately, like why is Jacks beard dark in the "future" but grey on the island? Was that a flash forward or a flash sideways, meaning there is a paralell universe? Where did Kate's freckles go in the future? Why is Kate free? Why is she driving a nice newer car? Why does Jack say "I need to stop lieing"??
Cant wait for season 4!

We've got a long wait! But the questions you are asking are precisely the mysteries they intended to leave us with:
1) Who is Kate with?
2) Why do Jack and Kate no longer talk? Is she with Sawyer? Did something else happen? We don't know
3) Whose funeral was it? The name on the obituary has been enlarged and it looks like Jeremy Bentham (in keeping with the use of names of philosophers on the show), but who is he? The obituary also mentions a place that is due to be completed construction in 2010, and so they may not get off the island just yet.
4) Life on the island was hard, but there was healing, courage, heroism, love, friendship, community and many other things that we often miss in everyday life. Jack thought he wanted to get off the island, but he misses what he had there when he does.
5) Is Jack's father alive, or is he just too drugged up to make sense?
6) Is this the actual future as it will be at the end of the series, or just a possible future that depends on what decisions Jack and others make in the mean time?
I've got reflections on this and other LOST episodes on my blog at http://blue.butler.edu/~jfmcgrat/blog/ (typically the Thursday entries).

Being rescued off the island and finding out Ben was right was what made Jack hit rock bottom.
There was no body in the coffin.
I think he may be delusional about his father with all the drugs he is taking.
Kate and Jack are not talking because of the shame that they feel about getting of the island and things that happened to others on the island.
I think it was Ben in the grave. Viewers have zoomed in on high def recordings and have seen a partial name on the obituaries with the letters Ben as part of the last name.
Next season is coming out next February 2008 with 16 straight episodes and 2 more seasons with 16 episodes until the series finale in 2010.

I agree, the future flashes were a bit confusing. I don't know who Kate is with, but I definately think it's one of the Losties. I think that the funeral was for Juliet; I find it hard to believe that Sun's funeral would have no one visiting. I think that if they got rescued and went back to their lives and drifted apart, when news that something happened to one of them (got married, died, graduated college, etc.) got out, they'd all ban together in a show of support. Ok maybe not all but at least some of them would. If Sun died, at the very least Claire, Jin, Hurley, and Kate would show up for the funeral. Even if it was Sawyer, who isn't always the most like guy, I think that Kate would definately go and Hurley probably would too. In fact, of all the people on the island that would have no one but Jack show up, my best guess would be Juliet.
Yeah the whole Jack and mentioning his dad in the future flash was confusing; he's dead...but yeah maybe the mysterious monster on the island has reanimation abilities.
It stands to reason that Jack might hit rock bottom like that; after alcoholism runs in families. And while he is a very strong leader, he takes everything upon himself. He takes the deaths of those he can't save so personally and so hard; and we all know that not everyone is going to survive. The memories of what happened on the island, all the deaths he couldn't stop, and the "secret" that he and Kate (and probably the rest of the survivors) are keeping (remember he said something about being sick of lying) is a huge cross to bare.
Next season starts in February....too damn far away if you ask me, but at least it will be NON-STOP!

ok the reason he was gonna comit suicide was he killed someone on the island( all his flashes were after he got off the island) what do u meen daddy problems? We wont find out who died till season 4 but i think it was juliete some how or maby it was sawyer. if it was sawyer that would explane kate not talking to him. the reason it showed no one else was because most of them died i quote ben " you have to get the walki and give it to me because if she calls that boat 9 miles off the shore of the island every one here will die". and thats my thearies
