Well dope is a common term for a plasticised lacquer that provides stiffness, protection, and a lightweight, airtight seal to woven fabrics.
Now I think 'they' call it dope because "plasticised lacquer that provides stiffness, protection, and a lightweight, airtight seal to woven fabrics" is such a long winded expression and humans are basically very lazy so they would prefer to save a few seconds saying dope rather than "plasticised lacquer that provides stiffness, protection, and a lightweight, airtight seal to woven fabrics"
It is remarkable but by employing such time saving measures humans have freed up much time enabling them to go about destroying the only habitable planet we actually know of.
