For a polyester umbrella painted with acrylics, is there a flexible varnish or some other product that can be applied to prevent flaking?

Krylon make a spray paint that is made for leather & vinyl, which means is very flexible & somewhat stretchy. Not sure if they make it in clear, but you may want to check at your local hardware store...

Hmmm, your umbella was coated in the factory so that's going to make it hard for any paint to stay attached to it, and your acrylics might want to crack when you fold your umbrella.... You could try a fabric waterproofing spray. It certainly shouldn't hurt it. I have had good luck with some Nikwax spray that I bought in a shoestore.

use fabric paint and yes you'd probably have to waterproof it again. but you could try it out in a shower to see if it's still waterproof
