a). In early times, people were seated at the dining table according to their status, with the king or highest-ranking noble at the head, the next highest to his right, then to his left, and so on down the table. If you've ever heard the term "below the salt", meaning lower-class, that comes from the fact that the more humble guests were placed toward the "lower" end of the table (away from the king/nobles) and the salt cellars (shakers) were placed near the upper end for the use of the higher-ups. So the use of a round table is symbolic of the fact that the Knights of the Round Table did not outrank each other, but were equal & united.

With regard to b), a circle does symbolize eternity, but I don't believe that was the primary reason for using a round table, although it may have added weight to the choice of the round shape.

Everybody has an equal share of the table. Nobody has a larger share.
Incidently during the Viet Nam war peace talks in Paris nobody wanted to sit at the short side of the table as that signified a lesser status, hence the talks stalled for quite some time causing more unnecessary deaths

To avoid any connection to leadership. It represented a symbol of equality for all. In several tellings of this tale it is pointed out that whoever arrived at the table first could take whatever position they cared to -- position played no role....

There was, however, a tradition that tended to negate the purpose of the round table. That tradition was that whoever sat at the right hand of the king was considered as being a favored one. It was one of the reasons Arthur always managed to appear late in calls to the round table so he could balance out that favored status.
