Seriously? You know they don't really exist, right? The "mermaids" that have supposedly been seen out at sea were actually manatees. When you've been out at sea on a fishing boat for a long time, the mind starts to play tricks on you.

Theoretically a mermaid would reproduce as most aquatic animals do, by external fertilization, requiring a human male to deposit his seed underwater onto her eggs. (The confusion is further compounded by the fact that mermaids are usually depicted with a navel, which would suggest placental vivipary rather than ovipary.) However, this situation is sometimes rectified by portraying mermaids as having genitalia more similar to dolphins than fish, or having the ability to change into human form. A prominent example of this is the Touchstone Pictures film Splash where the Mermaid character Madison, portrayed by Daryl Hannah, transforms into human form and sustains a romantic and sexual relationship with Tom Hanks' character, while retaining many of her undersea habits and mannerisms.

I would not say mermaids don't exist because there is so much of the sea that is uncharted.
I don't think they exist, however if they did I can only assume they would reproduce like most fish by laying the eggs and males would then come and fertilize them as reproductive areas of a mermaid would be the fish part.

If you look at really old pictures of mermen and mermaids (like Medieval or ancient Greek and Roman ones) -- at the front the fish-tails begin beneath the human genitals. So they can mate in the same way as humans.
E.G. this old picture of the merman Triton:

Technically, a mermaid will lay eggs in the sand when she is having her mer-strual cycle, then the merman comes along and fertilizes the eggs by mer-sturbating over them.

see, they get swirled up in a whirlpool of love. but, a merbaby is only formed and appears in the whirl pool if its true love. its mermaid protection. also, a baby can only be formed between a human male and a mermaid because the sperm is ejected out and into the pool, while an egg from a woman can't.

Well, it's entirely possible that they are actually assexual and reproduce without mating. There are several theories to suggest this possibility. I for one believe they just clone themselves every few years. I am sure though, that they leave their outfits on at all times.
