Hitler's decision to annihilate the Soviet field armies, as opposed to capturing cities with shiny steeples, was his grand strategy. It's debatable whether the war would've turned out any different with the capture of Moscow. A major political and propaganda victory for sure, but i'm not so sure of its tactical or military significance.

Yes, but Hitler took divisions from him for the push thru the Ukraine then the Russian winter set in and he didn't have enough strength to take Moscow. Also if Hitler hadn't givin him the not one step back order, he could of pulled back , during the winter of '41, and regrouped for a spring'42 offensive.
If Hitler had left the tactical decisions to Guderian, Manstein and Hoth, we might still be fighting that war.
