Usually start with softer, shorter strokes at first, to ensure that I've got the aim down right, and to best assess the behavior of the material into which the nail is driven. Once I've got a feel for it, though, I begin pounding harder and harder until the nail's driven deep, and the job's done.
...of course, there's rarely only one nailing involved, in most jobs.

really hard, its a good stress reliever and i could think of a few people who i want to be that nail that im pounding on, lol.
