Everything comes to an end in the long run, but then again, in the long run we're all dead. I think that challenges to the U.S. are coming, but this is more a matter of other countries developing, not our lack of it. After WWII, most of the other industrialized nations in the world were in ruins, with the exception of the U.S., so we became the economic driver of the world. With nations rapidly overhauling their economies in the last 40 years, it was inevitable that we could not maintain our lead in all areas. The last 50 years have been an anomaly, with the U.S. dominating the world economy. Now other countries are starting to be able to compete with us on many fronts, causing many to think that our time is past.
On the other hand, people have been asking your question for as long as the U.S. has been a great power, and we have not collapsed yet. First the Russians were going to bury us (to use Kruschev’s famous phrase) then the Japanese were going to outcompete us, and now the Chinese are going to outproduce us. The Chinese economy is only a fraction of ours, and will continue to be for some time to come, even at their current growth rates.
In the end, we may eventually have to rethink our place in the world, but we are going to continue to play a role. The United States is not in decline, but we will have to come to terms with the fact that other nations are also going to have significant says in the world.

Not all great nations have gone away. Some go through tough events and adapt but are still here, Great Britain, France, Japan etc are examples.

Some are gone.

We are obviously at a crossroads. Our currency is precarious as the standard of the world. Our land based military capability is now at its limit. This year Americans will spend more total money than was earned.

One more major terror attack on USA soil, or, the collapse of the dollar, or of the stock market and we will be in very bad shape. If all these happen expect world war to follow soon after.

There really never has been an actual WORLD WAR. If many nations begin fighting again it truly will become an international fight involving every major country on earth on every continent.

Who knows what will be left if that happens?

Not quite, but the end is coming if we dont do something about it.
We've rushed through the phases of empire without realizing that the last phase is either death or stagnation.

We are basically in a repeat of the 1920's right now. If we can play things right then we should resurge in a few years, if not we either get invaded (learn Chinese and German quick!) or we go the way of the Brittish, French and Spanish--respectable, but not what they were once. Unfortunately we're going to be falling from a lower level than the Brittish Empire, so we'll probably fall further and have more work to do to get to the point theyre at now.

Yes, I've heard that we peaked around the 1950's-1970's and are on a slow decline and China is going to replace us as the world's strongest country soon. China is still industrializing, while we did that 60 years ago.

I think we will slowly decline until we reach a trough and stay there. But we're not going to fade away like the Roman Empire or anything like that.

I believe America reached it's peak in the early 1960's. I know todays generation wouldn't agree, but a hedonistic society and greed had a lot to do with the downfall of Rome, I see history repeating itself, but I won't be around to see it.

America reached its (not "it's") peak back when people knew the difference between "its" and "it's." Obviously we've declined by now; your -- or as you'd probably misspell it, "you're" -- illiteracy is good evidence of this.
