I know that things can oxidize silver easily, but can similar things tarnish gold?

I am asking because i recently used acne medicine, it got on my hands and therefore on my ring, i put on my face and it oxidized my ring extremely. I am wondering what kind of substances would do this to a gold ring that I just ordered and am expecting to recieve in a short time. I plan on wearing it all the time and having substances come into contact with my hands.

Onew of the reasons gold has been so special through the ages is that is does not tarnish.

If you have something that tarnished, its not really gold.

Gold is inert. It does not tarnish . But it will get dirty. The oils from your skin will adhere to the gold allowing dirt, dust, and grime to stick to it. This allows bacteria to grow on the golds surface. These things will cause gold to lose its shine. There are many ways to cure this. An old toothbrush with toothpaste lightly brushed on the surface will quickly clean the gold. Or you could use vinegar and salt in a plastic cup. use a lot of salt. The abrasive salt Cristal's will brush away grime and the vinegar will loosen the grime as well as kill any germs. After a few minutes check your jewelery . When it is clean rinse with water and you are done. A commercial jewelery cleaner will also work but cost more. I hope this helps.

Everything oxidizes, which is just a loss of electrons. Gold is tarnished by air.

Gold has no oxides therefore does not tarnish.

Mercury attacks gold. Not air.
