The best product right now is Fipronil which must be applied by a licensed pesticide applicator. Fire ants can live 10 feet or more underground, gasoline won't get down that far. And Sevin dust just doesn't get to the queen.

Fipronil is sold under the name TopChoice by Bayer. It is used on parks and golf courses where people frequent. since it is applied by a licensed applicator only and at a very low rate, I have little qualms about children and pets on the law. Actually fire ant bites are very painful which would move me to get that Fripronil down ASAP. It lasts a year and keeps other ants from moving in. Rain doesn't seem to move it away.

There are many products out there that you spread on the lawn, water in, and wait a day or so. If you can keep your pets and kids from playing in the treated areas for about 24 hours, there won't be any problems.

My favorite remedy, after "over and out" by whoever( I think Ortho), is to pour a small amount of gasoline on the mound and light it. The ants make a little crackling sound like rice crispies and I get the satisfaction of payback for all those bites!

There are several products out that you can put down and they last all year. I work at a school and I treat the playground every Spring. Many of the students are allergic to the ant bites. The treatment works very well all year long.

If you wont get in trouble with the city you could burn your yard. I am guessing your out westsince you have a red clay yard. but burning them would be the easiest solution
