That is essentially how the economics of Yahoo! Answers goes! You give up points as a currency of sorts, because otherwise, you could just ask questions unendlessly, and people would have less of a reason to answer, seeing as they wouldn't have to spend any points to ask. It also helps to keep the number of questions at a reasonable level, as does the fact that you can only ask a certain amount of questions per day. This process is implemented just for regulation of the system, as it were. Think about buying things at the store without paying money? Why would you bother getting a job? Society would fall apart, as would this site if you didn't have to "pay" for your questions.

to discourage trolls and spammers, I guess. You're rewarded for giving an answer...although sometimes I think that's dumb too. If I had a nickle for every time somebody answered with idk and that's it...what a waste!
