Were you ever one? Have you ever picked up one? I answer yes to both questions, but that was quite a few years ago. I wouldn't do either nowadays!!!

I used to hitchhike alot when I was 14-15. One day, my 2 girlfiends and I got picked up by a guy who really scared the heck out of us. First of all...he got us stoned, then he started talking about how "you shouldn't just take a ride from a random stranger, you never know what he might do to you" and he started getting all creepy...we all pretty much freaked out, but thank God it all turned out.

I have picked up hitchhikers when I was younger, but not since I've had kids. Sometimes I think, "should I stop?", but then I start thinking about what I am putting at risk, so it stops me. =( It's too scary how these maniacs take advantage of the kindness of strangers...it prevents us from committing random acts of kindness.

I have never been one but have picked hitchhikers up many times. I think where i live makes a difference to the risks involved. i live in a rural area of australia and if i was to pass a hitch hiker and leave them stranded, you would find that they are the friend or relative of someone in the community and they then would ***** and moan that i didnt help.

I've never hitchhiked, and I've never picked up one. I've wanted to at times, but my brain takes over my emotions and tells me not to just in case they try to kill me, haha. Apparently way back in the day, my pappy used to be Mr. Hitchhiker-picker-upper. Or whatever you'd call that. My mom tells stories about him being the guy who gave anyone he saw walking down the road a ride, just because. I wish I could be like that but times have changed. :(

I did BOTH back in the early 70's. But I would NEVER never under any circumstances, today. Hitchhikers back then were just old hippies looking for a lift. Today they're murders and bank robbers and psychos, and they look just like everybody else. Sheeeeesh!

no to both, unless I knew the person stranded on the road. If there was a mother with her little kids, I would feel compelled to stop, but even then I'm worried she's just a lure.
what an insane time this has become, we're afraid to help someone in need.

No to both. I don't think I'd be or pick up a hitchhiker these days, too dangerous!

Never been one, I have picked up hitchhikers, but like you, it was a very long time ago, the world was safer then, or we thought it was.....

Last month, I picked up a guy. Turns out he had run out of gas. I drove him to the gas station and then back to his vehicle. I was terrified, but I'm glad I did it. The weather was nice, but he would have been walking for a pretty long time.
