It's not like it's wine or something.... It's not getting better by just sitting there. So I just don't understand. I can understand slamming the quality of the mainstream music of today, but that says nothing about underground music. Some bands are most certainly just as good as any classic rock band. So enlighten me, why are you all so obsessed?

I have listened to plenty of classic rock.... My dad was a big fan of it. And on top of that I have vinyl albums of some of the bands you guys are talking about that I bought. It's not that I haven't heard it.

I just don't get why a lot of the people here can't believe that current rock is not worth their time no matter who the band is.

I'm thinking everyone has missed my point.

I am NOT saying that I hate classic rock or anything like that.
I'm inquiring about the reason behind a large group of people on this site slamming all/nearly all current rock. Even though only mainstream rock is usually taken into account.

I think asking this question really is only causing me mental anguish because I've not gotten anything that feels close to a good answer...

In Hollywood there was a Golden Age of film when everything was new and exciting. Actors had much more mystique at that time than modern actors. It's the same with classic rock bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Kinks. Rock was still relatively young at that time. It was exciting, there were new and original things happening. The last great music movement was punk. Since then there hasn't really been a band that has done anything original, It's all been done. The Music Industry has changed these days. Unless it's an Indie label or whatever, artists aren't as free to do what they want musically.

classic rock is something that will live on forever. The bands you hear on the radio today will be gone after a year or so and you will hear more bands as time goes by. These bands are just temporary, they have a few good songs that people might listen to now, but in many years these bands will be forgotten. Also, the "new rock" people listen to today has very little meaning. People that listen to it say that the music is emotional and the words mean alot, but if you listen closely, its just a bunch of nonsense most of the time. If you listen to bands like Pink Floyd, you will see the meaning in the music. Many people dont understand it... classic rock has a lot of meaning and the lyrics talk about important things like war, history, and life. Songs like this sometimes give you goosebumbs when you listen to them, because you not only listen to the music, you feel it. All the punk rock and emo bands these days just create noise and nonsense lyrics that have little meaning... Try listening to Pink Floyd and watching the movie: "The Wall" Aside from Pink Floyd there are many other classic rock bands that are great (led zeppelin, the who, the doors, the beatles, and black sabbath)

I Like A Lot Of Different Music. Classic Rock Is Great. For Some, It's The Soundtrack To Their Lives... It's My Parents Music But I Love It To.

Speaking from the point of view of a musician, I can unequivocally say that the musicians were better. You could tell bands apart more easily then, because they had their own sounds as opposed to the modern day cookie-cutter mentality of today, where rather than having diversity, we have categories of sound-alike bands. Anything classic is lasting - that's what the word means...that something has stood the test of time. Like it or not, the classic rockers are not going anywhere. You will not be hearing about any of these forgettable modern bands twenty years from now, but you'll still be hearing Hendrix, the Beatles, Clapton, etc. Why? Because they were uniquely talented, and had something to say. I have heard absolutely nobody in modern music who shares this quality. The best of them are still derivative of the past. Look at hardcore - everybody sings through that same low voice pitch transformer and sounds identical, male or female. The problem is that kids today allow themselves to be completely at the mercy of the music BUSINESS, and are not allowed to hear enough diversity to make their own decisions.

Most people tend to prefer the music that was popular during their formative (teen) years. I think it's similar to the phenomenon that children can pick up languages easily, but adults have a harder time because their brain patterns have been hard-wired and it's harder to assimilate new information. Also, people tend to associate music that was popular when they were younger with happy, carefree (or emotionally deep) moments.

I see this happening with my generation - music from the 80's & early 90's is gradually replacing the oldies of the 50's-60's and classic rock of the 60's-70's as the standard, widely played music in radio, in bars, etc.

People like to stay with what is familiar. There's a classic rock station near Washington DC whose slogan is (something like) "you'll never hear a song that you don't know." There must be a psychological or neurological explanation.

I think it's because if it wasn't for the influence of the classics, today's mainstream music wouldn't exist. I'm not saying that every rock band out there was totally influenced by The Doors or Pink Floyd or The Beatles.. but they definately opened to door to mainstream. Elvis was banned from being televised from the waist down because of his "gyrating hips", yet now preformers wear next to nothing!! Pete Townshend's guitar smash.. now everyone is doing it! Musical tastes change within different generations. My parents listened to Elvis, I listened to Motley Crue, now kids are into Linkin Park and such. (not that I have a prob with them.. I thought Blondie and Anthrax were geniuses when the rap-rock intergration began!!) People's musical tastes change with age and experience. It just depends on whether they are open-minded enough to try something new.

Look back five years, and try to remember a song from that year. Music does get better with age, because the more you listen to it the more it grows on you. With new rock these days, you hear the same song on the radio 100 times in one week, that's not going to help it grow on you. Unfortunately most of these groups are good, they're are just way overplayed, and that puts off a lot of people. With classic rock there's a lot too choose from, what ever your taste is, and you don't hear the same songs so much.

The answer to this question is so simple it is only being overlooked. Every generation grows up to a certain sound and that is what they typically enjoy througout their lives. When my parents were younger, Elvis was the big thing. Their parents ranted and raved about how bad Elvis was and how he was not talented and so on. When my parents got older and I got into music I heard the same story about how the music I listened to was not any good, they simply rewrote old songs to fit them, etc. Now that I am older I hear what my kids are listening to and it tickles me because I think the same thing every parent has felt ever since music became in industry and this pattern will always continue. Do not worry about what people think about your music preferences, in a few years you will be listening to "Classis Rock" or "Classic PoP" or whatever catchy name it gets. One thing you can count on is that the more things change the more they stay the same.

I think that so many people love classic rock because it reminds them of some of the great times in their lives. I think today's rock has value also and I try and stay on top of all of the music changes. It really bothers me when people get stuck in the same old rut of music- people need to listen to the modern stuff also and they need to remember that when they were younger they didn't like every single band either so when they listen to todays music they need to give it a chance

Some people will find a style of music they like (in this case, classic rock) and will stand up for it. Like rap fans, who stand by their music of choice. Music from the era defined as 'classic rock' is music from a time of revolution, a time of enormous cultural change, and most of us fans will relate to that and listen to the songs that defined an era. As for the slamming of music, yeah, we all have bad apples in groups today and us classic rock fans have them too. Underground music is great, Toronto has alot of great groups that remain unsigned (And personally I hope they stay that way, some bands lose something when they 'go commercial'). Hope this clears some of it up!
