What does it mean when you "pull a heartstring"?

You've captured someone's heart or really made them feel for you. Someone's traumatic experience can "pull on heartstrings" because it saddens people and they can relate. Or a child's giggle can pull a heart string for someone that loves children. Make any sense?

I have always thought of it as a musical metaphor; if they pull your heart strings,they are playing your tune!!!
