When I was in Elementary School they had a contest every year, where you decorate a paper turkey with glitter, feathers, rhinestones and other craft stuff. So I was thinking of doing the same type of thing at my daughter's (4th) birthday party. It's only going to be her and one other little girl. So far the only thing I can think of is a butterfly. I am the LEAST creative person I know, so I need some more ideas. Also, if someone knows where I can find a GOOD basic butterfly outline, that would be great!!! Along with any other outlines you think would be good.
I tried to google all kinds of different things and I'm not finding anything really good. Also, I do not have any clip art programs, photoshop, paint shop, paint shop pro or ANYTHING even close to those.

Prewschoolers don't have good fine-motor control, so let them do something like cookies, where they won't be too frustrated and they'll get to eat it when it's done.
I have seen butterfly cookie cutters. You can make the cookie dough and frosting ahead of time so all they have to do is cut, bake, spread frosting and decorate. 4 is a bit young to have to stay with the project all the way through the mixing.

We have a three year old here, so I know where you're coming from.
Look on the Crayola website for some coloring pages, or even google on Coloring book pages and print some down. Let them color them with crayon or finger paint, then give them a glue stick and some glitter or sequins (do this part outdoors or you'll be cleaning up glitter forever) or feathers. All this stuff can be found at craft stores like Jo-Anne's or Michaels or AC Moore, all of which have on-line stores you can order from, too.
Or just give them some modeling clay, either store-bought or home-made and let them sculpt something of their own imagining, coil snakes of it and build it up into pots, or coil them around a can to hold flowers in.
Find some odd yarn and lay glue down on a paper (glue sticks are the best thing to use with little ones, and Elmer's makes one that is purple when you put it on so you can see it and then dries clear) and let them pat on lengths of yarn to design their own pictures.
Get colored chalks (sidewalk chalk) and a pound of table salt, crush a few chalk sticks and mix each color with a cup of salt in separate containers. Then find some clear plastic bottles and let them make sand bottles by layering different colors of chalk/salt in them.
Let them make paper chains.
Get a ream of colored construction paper and some markers at the local office supply store. Most of them will cut the paper into 1 1/2 inch wide strips for you on their machines (they have them if they do any printing services there). Then let the girls color pictures onto the paper strips and put them together in chains, again use a glue stick.
Let them color a sheet of plain paper with any colors they want--the wilder and more concentrated the color the better--then paint black poster paint right over the crayon. Once that's dry, let them take a chop stick or a plastic spoon and scratch the paint off in designs, they end up with a rainbow picture.
Get some popsicle sticks, glue two together in a cross, take lengths of yarn and wind different colors around the center, wrapping it around each arm as you go to make a God's Eye.
Let them plant tree clippings in a can filled with plaster to make a birthday tree and tie ribbons and little charms to it.
Let them make paper mache out of old news papers and wall paper paste (use wheat paste not synthetic in case they eat it) and let them layer it over an inflated balloon. Make the last layer out of used tissue or wrapping paper. Yes, it will take a couple of days to dry well, but they can then put it on a dowel and have their own *permanent* balloon.
Get some fabric crayons and a white cotton t-shirt for each of them, put cardboard in to hold the t-shirt stable, taping it as needed, and let them draw on the shirts with the fabric crayons. Heat set the pictures with an iron, according to directions on the crayons.
Is that enough stuff for them to do, or do you need more?

the yarn octopus

We would braid each leg of the octopus instead of leaving them straight.
Butterfly coloring pictures
Some of these have to much detail but it give you the outline for the butterfly.
