I will be babysitting a friends son this summer and both he and my daughter are 5, does anyone know somethings that I can do with them that are either cheap or free?

Luckily pretty much everything fascinates little kids! Here are some activity ideas:
~ Swimming
~ Play Pretend
~ Take them To A Park
~ Go to the Pound and Play with A Puppy - My local pound always enjoys having visitors to give the dogs company.
~Rent a Movie
~Do some fun, safe cooking together!
~Get some CD's and Play "Dance Class" - This game is great because they get excercise, too! Be sure to give them a chance to be teacher!
~If they behave take them to a dollar store and tell them they can each pick up any 1 or 2 items they like.
~Go to Toys R Us and pick up a 5 or 10 dollar craft kit for hours of fun!
~Make clay sculptures, paintings, drawings etc. And then make an "Art Museum".
~Play "Gymnastics" and teach them basic twists and turns along with a few group moves. Somethings like airplanes, summersaults, fish flops, baby cartwheels etc.
~Play "Mommy For A Day" Where for a period of time you are the kid and they are the mom/dad/guardian. Kids love this one!
Good Luck!

Sidewalk chalk, if you have a place to put it.

Make a beanbag toss game. You can use paper plates for targets if you need to.

Ask a newspaper if they have roll ends of newsprint. These are sheets that are 3-4 feet wide and maybe 20-100 feet long. They make large, cheap, great sheets for coloring on. The kids can trace each other, and color their own image. Then they can do each other, too.

Trips to the zoo, the park, the beach, or just to a Dairy Queen are huge fun for that age.

They can learn basic cooking - nothing dangerous, but maybe no-bake cookies, or something like that.

Get a subscriptions to "Highlights" magazine - we had one when I was young, and I loved getting mail when I was young. The stories are interesting, and there's suggested activities, too.

Search online for "Kids activities", "kindergarden crafts", and stuff like that. I bet you can find a bunch of guide books.

Ever give a kid a gift and have them play with the box? Get some clean boxes of different sizes for them to play with/make forts with/crawl in and out of. Some kids also willingly help with your chores - expecially if you take a walk or play a game with them afterwards.
