Like I read an American name Robert Fitzwald Gordon & many similar ones. Do they alter there names when they reach adolescence or its there parents who keep so complex names. Even I heard that many celebrities, like Madonna's original name is so different.
In other cultures, people usually prefer to use there ancestral surname. But I have come across americans who don't use even the surnames. I am very curious to know about this practise. Thanks

Typical Americans like myself keep our given sirnames. Some women choose to take their husband's sirname after marriage, others will either hyphenate their maiden names with the husbands name or continue to use their own name for professional reasons.

The reason celebrities like actors change their names is sometimes they have to because someone else goes by the same name in the actor's guild. Other entertainers do it to avoid confusion with someone with a similiar name.

Others like Madonna drop their sirname altogether because it lends them an air of mystery and ambiguity. You wouldn't know that she was Italian-American until you found out her sirname was Ciccone.

A lot of Americans use family names. For example, Leonidas Lomenick Cartwright, my brother's name, is a mouthful but is made up of family names from both sides of my family. Also, a lot of these names don't seem difficult to us. Most people do not alter their names unless they get married or divorced. We are basically stuck with whatever name our parents gave us. Celebrities change their names because their real name often is plain and unremarkable and they want something memorable. Those Americans who don't use their surnames often don't use them in an attempt to separate themselves from parents or family they didn't get along with or because it is something embarrassing and they do not wish to be made fun of becase of it. I hope this helped!

I use the name my parents gave me when I was born. I was named after my dad's favorite aunt. All my friends and family call me by my first name. My students call me by my surname with a Ms. in front.
