I'm sorry to say, £180 is not really excessive for a timing belt change. In the US, the cost for a timing belt for most cars typically runs about $250-$300. With 16V, you've got dual overhead cams.

It's not the timing belt itself that is expensive, $20 or about £10. It's the labor costs. Typically timing belts are not an easy part to get to and it takes quite a bit of time to get to it and replace it.

If you're dissatisfied with the initial quote, get another one.

on the vectra you must have a cambelt kit as the plastic rollers or the tensioner is the usual culprit when the belts snap.
expect to pay around 140 plus vat.
if someone wants to work for nothing and do it cheaper then let them.
check the water pump while its stripped down.

I had my 2001 2.2 SRI vectras cam belt changed about 2 years ago and it cost about £130 at a main dealer.
so with inflation that none gone up to much since then.

book time is 1.5 hours the belt itself will be around 35 pound but have the people quoted for a cam belt kit witch includes new tentioners as 180.00 is a little steep i would do it for about 90.00 belt only
