The brand matters little. A good (by which I assume you mean fast) laptop, just as a desktop, depends on the specs of it. Try some of these newegg.com or tigerdirect.com laptops. You'll get the same speed at lower prices, or conversely, more speed at the same price. Whichever you want to go with.

Ya Dell sucks all the way around, their products, their customer service, everything! Sooo, I highly suggest getting a Toshiba laptop, they last a really long time and have great customer service. Also, you can get an HP... I personally had a bad experience with one, but I've heard several good things about them too though. Sony's are really good too, but their pricey, I'd rather spend less money and still get a good one, so all in all... Toshiba wins in my book!

As a previous poster said, brand name is not what matters. The features of a laptop are more important and each laptop is made up of several importants parts. First, you will need to decide how much money you want to spend on your computer. Once you decide on a price range it will make it a lot easier to narrow it down to which laptop is best for you. You also need to think about what things you are going to use your computer for ex. if you are going to download a lot of music or movies you will need a larger hard drive or if you plan on playing the latest computer games you will need a good graphics card.
Here is a list of some of the things that you will need to look at when deciding which laptop to buy:
1) CPU -- The faster the better...
2) memory--The more memory the laptop has the better.
3) Hard drive--The bigger it is the more you can store on your computer.
4) graphics card...if you want to play the latest games you will need a pretty good card on your laptop
5)screen size--obviously the bigger the easier to see
Here is a link to Computer Shopper which does not sell computers but makes buying one easier. They give help on choosing laptop features and help find the best prices/features among companies that sell computers. You should scroll down to the buying guides for laptops.

permit me preface by conserving that i'm an approved Dell and HP Reseller. I certainly have not something against Macs in any respect. in certainty, i'm tremendously inspired by the present Macbooks. in case you prefer the Microsoft working equipment, the Dell Vostro laptop has been my modern-day %. for many suitable fee for lowend laptops. for my area, you're comparing apples to oranges. they don't evaluate to a minimum of one yet another as they the two have distinctive reward. My expert opinion: Macbooks - good (geared up on Unix platform), sturdy courses, trouble-free, extra inflexible standards, extra helpful video modifying means, means to run XP purely approximately (employing utility). Dell Vostro - Comes with XP or Vista, versatile with utility, lots of hardware strategies, low priced. i prefer to advise you communicate on your instructors first and ask what they are going to be employing. finally, you will discover much less issues in case you whichever platform they're employing.
