Where I live a lot of people don't realize that "Hurt" is a NIN song that Cash re-did. I just wondered which people liked more.

Well I love them both. NIN wrote it so I give Trent his respect and of course he sang it in a fragile way which sounded really full of remorse and sad.
Cash did the same thing, but couple that with who Johnny Cash was and what everyone knew about his life and the song is a beautiful emotional resignation of his fate.
I think Cash was the only one who could have remade it and did it justice and even gave it new meaning. Awesome.

Both have merit. Johnny Cash can make any song sound good, but in this case, it was a great song already.
I think I will be different and say the live version done by David Bowie with Trent Reznor is the best.
I don't know if it was released "officially" but it's easily found on Limewire.

NIN! I really liked and respected Johnny Cash but that was one song he shouldn't of touched.

I like Cash version better, he just sings it with so much emotion. The original by NIN is good to of course

being a huge nin fan i will go with theirs. BUT Johnny Cash truly captured the tortured emotion of that song. he sang it so beautifully.

Love the Cash song. It is a regular on my radio stations playlist.
It's cool he covered a NIN song but nothing tops his Ring of Fire song with "Spanish horns"??? So strange - but it works.
