Honda has consistently been having problems with their automatic transmissions. This is a known issue that is well documented on various web sites and reliability studies. To satisfy customers, Honda did extend the warranty on most of their vehicles with automatic transmissions to 100K.

Only the ones with the V6 have a higher probability of premature failure. Not just the Accord, but Odysseys and Acuras from those years as well.

Honda's automatic transmission are different from other automatic transmissions. Unlike other transmissions, Honda transmissions do not make use of planetary gearsets. Instead, they use sliding gears on parallel axes like a manual transmission.

No matter what vehicle you have, replace the fluid (and filter) regularly with the fluid of the appropriate spec, even if the manual says it's a lifetime fill.

Honda extended the warranty for many automatic transmissions from the early 2000s. So if you have a problem with the transmission, ask the Honda dealer about it.
