The first thing you need is to be a liar, then you have to be able to skirt round the truth. Then you have be able to avoid giving answers to direct questions. That's how top politicians are.

1) An ability to lie while keeping your face perfectly straight.

2) An ability to avoid answering a straight question just in case it looses you any votes.

3) An assumption that political correctness is a actually a legal requirement.

4) An ability to convince people that you actually believe in a good cause and will fight tooth and nail for it it even though your only true cause is personal self gratification.

5) The ability to convince others that you have morals even though you have none.

6) The misguided belief that people are remotely interested in what you have to say and that you are convincing people that you are genuine even though they can clearly see right through you.

7) A total disregard for the intelligence of the public at large.

8) The arrogance to believe that you always know best.

9) The arrogance to believe that your views are those of the people you were elected to represent without even consulting with your public.

10) A ruthless dedication to gaining power and personal wealth through public office.

11) The ability to be a party "yes" man / woman at all times in order to maintain or enhance your political party position.

I am not sure those are qualifications but they are definitely "essential qualities" from the many politicians I have had dealings with.

Most are required to be residents of the area they are elected to be an official of, they must be old enough to vote and be a citizen or meet an age prescribed by law. Felons are generally prohibited from public office. Those are the legal requirements.

As for the type of person you get all you have to do is look at them. Many are in it for the privileges and power to push their beliefs on others. They are so obsessed with their agenda that they will lie, cheat and steal to gain their objectives. These politicians do not represent the people, but themselves and their party. They are so sure that they are right, that they will not listen to the people and become career politicians. I call them Liberals, Leftists, Socialists, Communists and Fascists, because the end result is tyranny.

Then there are those who feel obligated to serve in public office to actually represent the will of the people. They listen to the people who elected them, do as their constituents want and often step down after one or two terms. They try to tell the truth and are mocked as being out of touch with government. They are not in public office to get rich or land a high-paying position with a government contractor. They are honest and usually become disillusioned quickly by all the lies and back-room good old chums and their deals. I call them Conservatives, Patriots, Libertarians, Rightists and Religious Moralists.

These labels do not correspond exactly to any existing political party, as you can find the bad politician types in any party, as well as the good ones.

There are no qualifications to be a politician.
There are however, qualifications for positions.
For President, you have to be a born citizen of the United States of America, and be at least 35 years old.
It's always a good idea to start small and work your way up, for instance, start as a city council man, run for mayor, then state legislature, then governer, then go federal.

You are right, some of these people don't know what they are defending, or who they are defending it from.

Khushwant is only partly right. If the son had come home with some riff raff friends and whisky and hooch along with a sack full of money also and told his father that the cops are after him and that he(his father) better immediately arrange for a top lawyer to bail him out because he and his friends had just busted a bank, then his father could have been absolutely clear that his son would be one day be ruling the country. Have a Nice Day.

Here's my favorite political joke.
A man walks into a bar, he's carrying a shotgun and has a steer on a rope. He orders some coffee, drinks it, shoots the steer and leaves.
He comes in the next day, again, he's carrying a shotgun, has a steer on a rope, and orders some coffee,The bartender asks him, "what's this all about."
He tells the bartender he's running for congress, come in, shoot the bull, go home and leave a mess for somebody else to clean up.

If you meet age and citizenship requirements, and can convince enough people to vote for you, you're in. Of course running for office isn't cheap. Running for federal office is a lot more expensive than running for a position in city government. You'll have to make a lot of compromises along the way, and deal with a lot of people you may not like, and will owe a ton of favours to people with a lot of influence. It's a dirty business.

For the US government you have to be 35 to be a senator or president and 25 for House. The president must also be born in the USA. That's about it.

You need two things:

1. A big mouth so you can talk incessantly instead of actually fixing problems.
2. Greed so you don't feel guilty making so much money for doing nothing.

Oh, and a nice suit.
