Because liberals own the media, it would appear that there are many more democrats.
However, Republicans represent the silent majority.

The Democratic Party is the largest and oldest political party in the world. They may be larger than the GOP but not by enough to make a significant difference. It has pretty much been that way since 1850 if we discount the civil war and reconstruction when the Republicans had a definate majority in the North.

MORE REGISTERED DEMOCRATS, BUT...
The reason why Republicans dominate in Presidential elections is because most Independents lean toward the Republicans and they are the largest group.
The "independents" are often called the "Silent Majority" and they tend to hate the Democrats' Liberalism. They help to sweep Republicans into office. Plus, most of the Democrats live in concentrated areas around the cities. They don't represent the average American.

more registered democrats i believe, but not by much. however, this doesnt really matter because we have an electoral college for president. if 90% of the country was liberal and they all lived in CA and NY they would get crushed in every election. so, when talking about pres. elections, it isn't about how many you have, but where you are placed that counts. plus, the GOP typically has older, more reliable voters while democrats have a wider demographic of voters that are less reliable when it comes to showing up at the polls

There are a lot more Democrats. Republicans only stay relevant as a vocal minority because a lot of Democrats don't vote.

No one knows how many there are because there is no way to keep count. Many states do not have a system of registering to vote by party.

Why does it matter?
Not trying to stir controversy, but one's political affiliation should not be a census issue... That's kinda creepy, don't you think? Keeping track of people's party affiliation?
