As one answer put it, California is a big state. Also, you failed to mention when; that makes a big difference in expected weather.

In the summer, the coastline is typically in the 60's; while inland is typically in the 80's in the flatlands. In the mountains, you'll find 70-80's in the day, but it could freeze at night time because many of the mountains are desert lands and heat is not retained at night. Just about all of California, except for the extreme north, will be dry with fog along the coast.

In the winter, the coastline is typically in the 50's, while inland is in the 60's during the day. In the mountains, you'll find freezing weather and, hopfully, lots of snow for skiing. Also in the winter, most of California will have rain, more as you go north up to the Oregon border. San Diego will have very little rain, even in winter.

Year round, the best thing to bring is layered clothing. As evenings come, the temperatures drop rapidly because of the desert conditions throughout most of California. As most of the coastline in California is tourist land, wear what tourists generally wear...comfortable, casual clothes. No need to dress up unless you're the kind of person who likes that sort of thing. I've lived in California for over forty years and I've yet to be kicked out of a restaurant for not wearing a tie and coat.

In general, for summer, bring the kind of clothes you wear in early autumn back on the East Coast. But make sure you layer so you can doff some layers should it get really hot...which it sometimes does even around San Francisco when the winds come from the east.

For winter, bring the kind of clothes you wear in late autumn back on the East Coast. But, again, layer. Or, if you know you'll be in the mountains, bring winter togs. That's the kind of temperatures you'll encounter in California.

not an easy answer unfortunately. California is a very big state, almost 800 miles from top to bottom. Right now in San Francisco it is nice and pleasant shorts weather during the day and jacket at night. To give you an idea of range of weather for the next week:

redding (way up north) highs in the mid 90s and lows to mid 60s.

east bay san francisco highs for the week in 70s and 80s lows to 50s

LA highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and low in mid 50s

San Diego is in low to mid 60s and over night low to high 50s.

Personally I would bring a couple pairs of shorts, maybe jeans, khakis, polo shirts t shirts to mix and match and a jacket, like something fleecy or sweatshirt. and flip flops or sandals and maybe some tennis shoes.

Right now it is nice and warm in northern part of the state. But down south it is chilly and foggy.

Hmmm. Yes big state, but here goes...
Jeans (1 or 2)
Denim or twill cargo shorts -- bermuda style (1 or 2)
Swim Trunks
Dress pants and one pair of nice shoes if clubbing (1)
Collared shirt -- again if clubbing (1 or 2)
Short sleeve t-shirt (as many as fit)
Long sleeve t-shirts (3 or 4)
Hoodie (1)
Jacket (If in San Francisco at all -- its must for Fog!) (1)
Socks and UW
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Shoes....

So basically -- jeans, shorts, t-shirts and hoodies are good.
Wear flip-flops, vans, tennis shoes
Unless place has dress code then you need nice shoes, collared shirt. (polo or button-up)
Long sleeve t-shirt under short sleeve is popular for chilly evenings.
