If you're intent on doing this, the main fuses to the airbag must be removed. You must check the owner's manual and it will probably advise you to remove the fuses and the battery. It will probably also advise you not to do it.

These airbags are a onetime use type thing and rather explosive. Unless you have a very good reason to remove your wheel, it's best left alone. In fact, if you're working on a car and think you may have a chance at accidently setting it off or tapping into the circuits that trip it, you're at risk at personal injury and then buying a new air bag and cover that goes over it.

Think of it as a small explosive device that if you're too close to, will knock your head off because that's what very well could happen. Anything remotely connected to the airbag must be handled with great care.

If you are serious about doing this, you must first remove any fuse that powers any and all air bag components. Next you must disconnect the yellow connector at the base of the steering column. All air bag system components use yellow connectors. NEVER NEVER NEVER tap into an air bag system wire. There should never be a need to do so. Once the fuses are pulled and the connector disconnected at the base of the steering column, it is safe to remove the air bag. You must remove the air bag before removing the steering wheel. There will most likely be two or three screws that hold the air bag module to the steering wheel. These come in from behind the air bag. Usually torx bit screws. When you lift up on the air bag module, there will be another yellow connector underneath it. This disconnects the air bag from the wiring in the column and the sir coil. always store the air bag facing upwards. In the rare occurance of the bag self deploying, if the bag was facing downwards, when it goes off it will shoot up in the air. If the bag is facing upwards, the bag will remain on the ground and the bag will deploy harmlessly.
Now you can do whatever you want with the steering wheel. You need a puller to remove it.

You need to get the PROPER instructions for this. Generally preparation involves removing fuses/disconnecting battery and discharging the energy storage device in the airbag control. How this is done will be specific to your car model.
If you get it wrong and the bag goes off in your face you could get eye damage, broken nose, bruising, chemical burns,&c.&c.
Even in normal use airbags cause slight injuries, but they do keep the steering column out of your lungs, which is worthwhile.

Get a mirror and lock up the holes on the back of your steering wheel. You may need a torque bit or allen head bit and some vehicles use phillip head screws. Check the horn contacts there should be four of them.

You don't remove a steering wheel with an airbag - you use a spanner!!!!

Don't attempt the repair. I've been to a bentley factory about 18 months ago, and even qualified enginereers put them in huge metal cages. They can cause serious injuries! Please do not attempt it yourself.
