FaZizzle had a very good answer, but let me expand on that:

1) Replace all worn weatherstripping on all doors and windows.
2) Control the moisture outside.
3) Control the moisture inside.
4) Keep all mulch at least one foot away from your home.
5) Keep all mulch on your property no more than 1.5 inches deep.
6) Keep the aphids under control.
7) Keep the food in tight-sealed containers and wash your counters every night.
8) Bait every ant nest you find outside. I recommend Amdro which you can find at many stores. FOLLOW THE LABEL DIRECTIONS EXACTLY!
9) When all else fails, call a professional.

If you have an ant colony or colonies living inside your walls, you can try Terro Ant Bait. DO NOT SPRAY THEM WITH ANY CHEMICAL. This will only make your problem worse.

If you have the dreaded Odorous House Ant nesting inside... you won't be able to fix it yourself. You'll have to call a professional and stay with them forever (if they do the job). Most Odorous House Ant problems can be solved in a month, sometimes two. Keeping them out so you don't have to go through that again is the key. Pick a company who will treat quarterly and will guarantee their work between with $0 for call-backs.

Peppermint. They hate that. There are some good organic sprays on the market that are safe to spray indoors and out and they smell minty too. Ants will also not cross a chalk line. Dust the perimeter of your home with chalk dust. Best of luck.

Pour Borax 20 Mule Power washing powder around the perimeter walls of "yer" house. Just do it when you know rain isn't coming.

1) Make sure your windows are sealed
2) Spray the foundation with a pesticide
3) Use terra (maybe terro) strips from Lowe's/Home Depot. They work GREAT as a bait.

It is hard to keep them out of anything, but there is a simple solution to keeping them under control. Try filling small bottle caps or jar lids with beer and put them near the areas you most notice them in. It is said that they become intoxicated and drown. I works for me. It is also a good solution to keep slugs out of flower beds too. : ) Hope this helps.

I had a friend who put salt all around the outside of the house and along the window sills. She said it really worked.

try using baby powder. i know it sounds weird but it really works. you pour a line along the floor of the doorway and also along the window seals. this discourages ants from crossing the line of powder. it works great.

Keep a dead horse or something in the backyard and they will be attracted to that instead.
