instantly. I would address the situation as inappropriate, but then instantly move on.

I've used this strategy with my own children.

And the phrase "I get that what you did was very funny, but is also inappropriate, and I can not let you do that" very effective.

It showed that you "got it" but wouldn't let the behavior continue.

Silliness usually gets a laugh or a few giggles out of the class, me included. However, rudeness or disrespect is a different matter. After stating that the comment was unacceptable, we move on. Under a few conditions would the situation deserve anymore time than that.

Getting upset isn't the way to go. Don't have rules...have procedures and consequences for not following the procedures. When a kid screws up and doesn't follow the procedure, there is a natural consequence. Here's hwo we do it. If you don't do it this way, that's your choice, but the consequence is _______. Maybe five minutes of recess time next to the teacher and not with firends. Something easy enough to stick to.

I am still upset with some silly things that my students did last school year. Just kidding! Why get upset when students do something silly? Get upset when students are disrespectful or disruptive!

I dont get upset at them. They are kids, they are supposed to do or say silly things.

Being disrespectful is another story though.
