You can connect to any Windows computer that has file sharing already setup by setting up file sharing on your Mac. Follow the two articles linked below.

There is no conversion of most files. Word files (filename.doc) can be opened on any computer that has MS Word installed. Image files (jpg, tif, gif, png, pdf) are fine in either QuickTime or Preview on the Mac. Most other types can be opened by Photoshop or Graphic Converter on the Mac. Most rich text format (rtf) text should be compatible on both systems, open with Word or TextEdit on the Mac. PowerPoint, fine on both except for some oddities about characters that are created by key combinations. Excel is usually fine but occasionally has some formatting quirks. HTM and HTML pages, fine on both except sometimes code that is designed for Internet Explorer only rather than universal www3 code will not look exactly the same in Safari or Firefox but with any luck, Windows users will move to Firefox in increasing numbers so that may soon be history. You won't be using the same application installers on both Windows and Mac so forget about .exe files on the Mac or .pkg files on the Windows box.

open your document in word on your mac. Go to save as...you will be given an option of what format you want the document saved as. choose the one that says it will support xp/windows 04. I think this will work, I'm not totally sure with xp but i know it have done it with a pc and windows versions of word.
