Freewill: Evil; No freewill: Good. Which is worse?

Virtue is free act of the will, you cannot coerce people to be virtuous, or their actions are not truly virtuous. People choose an evil over the good, because they are under the impression that a particular evil is a good. This is an indication how the exercise of our will is conditioned by our the contigency and finitude of our nature.

If a person is forcing someone to act "good" there is someone evil involved. There are many evil people in this world, but I think someone taking complete control over another person is the worst kind of evil. The situation of people being forced to ask good is worse because there is a higher level of evil involved.

This is an excellent question!

Forcing anyone to act in a particular manner (whether good or bad) has its problems. For example, one might say that requiring us to stop at a red stoplight is an example of force. No one may step in front of the vehicle to physically stop us from breaking the signal but in most cases, there are consequences that pretty much whup our asses for breaking a rule.

Is this good? Obviously it is, for it reduces accidents.

But what if we take it further? What if we extend enforced "good" to situations that have not demonstrated danger but which logically might?

I think I'm beginning to write a thesis (or at least, a dissertation) so I'll end inconclusively.

What? You expect every philosophical question to have a resolute answer? *grin*

You're right in stating that forcing people to act good isn't worth anything.

This is the main reason God permits people to act upon their hearts, and the main reason that the truth of his creation, the truth of sometimes specific dogma is given a certain je-ne-sais-pas-quoi that lets them feel safe in choosing.

This way they may be judged not from what they are forced to do. On judgment day all those that do not like to act "good" of their own free will will simply be erased as so much chaff.

Good luck.

thats a good question, and the answer is if your forced to do something good, then it is good, but only to the thing that the good is being put on, so it basically means that your not true to your self, i guess, but really isnt it better to be forced to do good then to just do evil, i mean life is hard enough as it is, so its better to do good, anyways good question, i never looked at evil and good that way before. Remember good is also just an opion, becasue in all good there is evil and in all evil there is good, it was good for hitler to win the war, but bad for him to lose it, but good for us, so whats good ?

Evil is definitely worse. Although, they are conscience of their actions, it remains a waste of valuable energy that can be used elsewhere productively. People that act good are at least contributing a positive energy even if it is hypocritical. You may be surprised, there are really good people out there that aren't faking it.

Free will is the ability to choose.
If you don't make a choice, you have still made a choice!

People choose which ever behavior and actions the intend to do and accept as normal for them.
Unless they have an underlying medical/ emotional condition that regulates that normal ability to make a logical choice.

Where do you live that people are "forced" to act good? I've lived in a lot of places in the past 70 years and was never forced to be good. Please name the places, I'll be sure to stay away from them.

I'd say I rather act evil of my own free will than to be a slave of virtue. At least no one's telling me to be evil.

hey
well i think that if you have to be forced to be 'good' then your not yourself, so you'll never be true in life. However, if you are 'evil' then you're not going to make so many friends so neiher one sounds good.
but i think being evil and yourself is better [i will be critised...i will be critised!!] because then at least ppl know who you are....and best of all, YOU know who you are.
hope that helps!
XD
