Most of us know some of them, a few probably know all of them. We tend to know ones like California, Texas, Florida, maybe Utah, Louisiana, Washington, New York... and we have a rough idea where places like Oklahoma are because of tornadoes.

A funny story for you:
A friend of mine was flying into Chicago from New Zealand. Sitting next him was another person from New Zealand. They were discussing the great lakes, cities in the US, etc. My friend asked the person sitting by him if she knew what state Minneapolis was in. She rolled her eyes and said OF COURSE I do! He was embarrassed he didn't, but he asked her well what state is it then? So she says, "The United States of America! Everyone knows that!" He laughed but kindly did not reveal her ignorance. I'd say generally people from England would focus mainly on the whole country, but we as Americans tend to know less about other countries than they know about us.

I agree with most of the answers that British people know more about US geography than vice versa, but will also go one step further, American movies, music etc. are so widespread around the globe it's no wonder people are more familiar with it, I don't think it's just that the rest of the world are better educated, America is just "out there". I'm Canadian by the way and don't expect the average American to know anything about us(which they generally don't) then again, I know very little about the geography of Mexico, Africa, Australia(to name but a few)it wasn't taught in school.

why do english people need to know about the USA? I know nothing about their country...and I've been there before. They actually probably know a lot more about the USA than people know about them. Some people don't even know that England is an island....hello!? We Americans think we're so superior and we're pretty stupid actually. I'm speaking of myself as well. I'm no good at geography...i only know the states because i had a puzzle when i was little :)

well i'm not from England but i think it depends on the person, if he/she knows some geography sure, but otherwise it would be the same that if a person from England tell some one from USA they are for example Leicester or Nottingham, some may know some may not.

My experience is that a Brit is more likely to know where Nebraska is than an American is to know where Shropshire is.
