Overclocking is usually practiced by PC enthusiasts in order to increase the performance of their computers. It is the process of forcing a computer component to run at a higher clock rate than it was designed for or was designated by the manufacturer. The usual components are processors, video cards, motherboard chipsets, and Random Access Memory (RAM).

You have to be kind of careful doing it, because it can cause overheating and sometimes some functional problems, which can lead to data corruption.

It is when you take the motherboard (actually the FSB) or Graph card past their recommended speeds. Sometimes the Motherboard comes with a built in utility in the BIOS to do it. You can then normally also set the BIOS to shut the PC down at a temp you spacify. I you are gona overclock your PC, be sure you have sufficient cooling in it. Hope this helps!

Its adjusting settings beyond factory default settings...it's a bit like a driver getting the speedo to go off the dial...dangerous unless you really know what you are doing.
It is done in your bios. (hope you were only just curious)

Imagine you have a 3 litre car that does 130mph, now you 'tweak' it, so the engine now go faster at 150mph, but you are making your engine work faster than whats its designed to do, most time it should be fine, as long as you supply enough cooling

overclocking modifies the components (hardware) in a way that they run faster than the original design
