I have lived in the U.S for some 20 years and have come in contact with Americans from the super rich to down right poor.
Most super rich Americans know that there is no such place as the best and the very poor also know that people from other countries are far better off than they are. But majority of the so called middle class who have hardly ever set foot in a foreign country believe that the U.S is the best. To be fair don't they have to have visited and actually lived in other industrialised nations before making comparism.

That would be my thought. I am American, I visited my mother's parent's homeland, Scotland, for three weeks and loved it, but you can't get any idea of what ordinary people's lives are like on such a trip. I would love to be able to go back.
I have also been to Spain with a side trip to Morocco. It was actually an island off the coast of Spain, but still part of Spain. It was nice, but I wouldn't want to go back there and I most definitely wouldn't want to go back to Morocco.
So all I have to go by is my experience in America.
I believe that America has a lot of problems, racial and cultural tension, the widening gap between the have and the have nots (the middle class has pretty much disappeared), our health care system sucks and the benefits that our major companies offer their employees lag way behind those of many European countries. Yes we have our problems, and no I don't know what it would be like to live in another country. I'm sure there are benefits and disadvantages in other countries the same as there are here.

I'm not poor compared to other countries and even when I get down I think of that all the time. I didn't know I was very poor though. I have never been out of the country nor do I desire it I am perfectly happy to be in America fof the rest of my life. Maybe they mean U.S. is best for them lol. With all the war going on I would rather stay close to home. I'm not forced to stay here I chose to stay here because this is where I'm confortable at.

I've been to Germany, Italy, Canada and Jamaica, all of which have different forms of government, taxes and social benefits. I am a member of the so-called "middle class," and can say, most definetly, we are victims of our freedom.
Between the conservative Right and the liberal Left, we are quickly destorying any sense of "freedom" by creating laws and precedents that limit freedom of speech, freedom to worship, access to education, and health care.
Yes this is a GRAND country between the Pacific palisages, the Rocky mountains, the plains and the Jersey shore, but I'd rather live in Germany for the hipocracy we call government.

i've lived here for 18 years and i love it. i wouldn't live somewhere else even if you paid me. we are not rich and we are not dirt poor, my family is closer to the lower middle class. pretty much all my life we have had to use food stamps and have assistance, but no matter what even if we would be considered rich in another country i'm just fine right here. this is my home and it always will be. When I was little I never knew we had money troubles. There was food on the table and Christmas was always wonderful. I had my family there and nothing else mattered.

I'm middle class. For me, it's the best place. I'm happy here. I have all the freedoms I need. I work and earn my own living, and I make my own way. I'm able to worship as I choose and have all the friends I like. And I can go and do as I please. I know there are people better off than me, and there are people who are far worse off. I have visited a few other countries, and while they are nice......Texas is my home. I feel no need to make any kind of comparison.

Yes. We have so many more rights then in other countries. If we want we can walk down the street and talk about our religion, our president, vote, choose who want to date or marry, we have freedom of speech, and our goverment is a democracy. The poor people may not see it as a great place to live, but it is. People in other countries are not better off then we are and in most cases they are worse off.

Technically, yes they do. Their opinion doesn't hold much weight if they don't have the experience.

But they don't just have to live in other industrialized nations to know. Some people in third-world countries live humble lives and are generally much happier than people who commute to their office job and have nice toys.

To assume only people in industrialized nations are happy and have good lives is just as narrow-minded as the folk who believe outright that the U.S. is the best place to live.

It depends on the type of person you are. I like nature. I despise pop culture, TV shows, shopping, big vehicles, traffic, commutes, having to buy gasoline all the time, etc. I would be happier in a more rural setting, and quite possible in another country. "Why don't I just leave then" you ask? I'm finishing school, and then I may. It's why I studied Spanish.

That would be nice if more had traveled but then again, many people in other countries never leave their homes and believe they live in the best place. Who am I to argue with them? I've traveled extensively and everywhere I have gone, I've met dozens of people who have never left the soil of their home country.

Here's how I see it. If you are happy where you live, good on ya. It's one thing we can change about our lives for certain. I think living in Los Angeles is great - for me. Do I think it's great for everyone? By no means. Do I think the person happy to be in Boise, Idaho is stupid for living in a place I could never live in? No. If they're happy, so be it.

Wow, I completely agree with you. I, too, understand what you are saying about the middle-class. I want so badly to answer "yes," but I don't think I can do it. There are so many factors, but issues such as education, crime, poverty, and morality really cause me to think twice. There are so many nations that are doing so much better than we are in these areas, and I can see those things negatively affecting my fellow Americans on a daily basis. I hope someday that I can say "yes."
